The process of data collection in social sciences can involve considerable amount of effort, time and money, especially when large and diverse samples are needed for valid conclusions. The data collected in the process can often be used to explore more than one research problem. New analyses can be done, but also the data can be compared or combined with datasets from other sources.

Social science research data often cannot be reproduced as is the case in the natural sciences. They capture current social, economic and political situation at the moment of collection, which changes sometimes very drastically over time and this change itself is interesting to explore. Comparative and longitudinal analyses are very valuable methods when exploring societies and people and how they change.
